THECORNER.COM LAUNCHES CUTTING-EDGE WOMEN'S COLLECTIONS
in a unique collaboration with Nick Knight and SHOWstudio
September 2009 sees thecorner.com - the virtual space showcasing "mini-stores" from artisans and cutting-edge brands launched by YOOX Group - introduce women's collections for the very first time. The womenswear labels available on thecorner.com will be featured in an innovative fashion film project, created in collaboration with SHOWstudio and devised and directed by the visionary photographer Nick Knight.
Nick Knight uses Fashion Film to present key looks from thecorner.com's designer labels for men and women, including Maison Martin Margiela, Haider Ackermann, Ann Demeulemeester, Viktor & Rolf, Proenza Schouler, Rick Owens, Hussein Chalayan, Raf Simons, Kris Van Assche and Sophia Kokosalaki. The exclusive film, directed by Knight, is the result of a unique collaboration with leading fashion creatives including filmmaker Ruth Hogben, stylists Simon Foxton and Jonathan Kaye, and set designer Michael Howells. The resulting film, Portent, is a sensual, delicate and poetic exploration of romantic Classicism through the male and female form, accentuated by exquisite clothing from a raft of the world's finest designers - a portent, indeed, of the season's fashion to come.
SHOWstudio, founded by Nick Knight in November 2000, consistently pushes the boundaries of communicating fashion. With its dedicated commitment to innovative communication of fashion online, SHOWstudio is the ideal partner for thecorner.com, a unique concept of online retail where each designer conveys its distinct image and identity to create a sophisticated shopping experience.
Previously featuring solely menswear collections from cutting edge designers, from September 2009, the research brand department store will showcase new "corners" dedicated to womenswear, featuring international contemporary designers such as Rochas, Haider Ackermann, AF Vandervost, Proenza Schouler and Charles Anastase to name but a few. New debuts for men's brands like Undercover, the Japanese cult label will also be sold exclusively on thecorner.com through an online customised shop-in-shop.
Hussein Chalayan presents its HOME tote
Following the HOME movie happening, directed by Yann Arthus-Bertrand and produced by Luc Besson, Hussein Chalayan is joining PPR's initiative* to create an animal-printed cotton canvas tote bag.
« The social and environmental issues facing the world today are immense, committing the future of humanity. Being a global leader, PPR must set an example by informing and raising awareness to encourage each individual to take action. The PPR Group is proud to support the film HOME. Our partnership is a financial support in the production of the movie, but also means a general involvement from all the brands of the PPR Group », declares François-Henri Pinault, CEO of the PPR Group.
« The environment we are living in has been a leitmotiv theme throughout my career. It felt completely natural to join forces and create that tote bag for the HOME project. I wanted something with a very simple and obvious message that speaks to everyone", says Hussein Chalayan.
The starting point for the Hussein Chalayan HOME tote bag was thoughts about global warming and its effect on the animal kingdom. This was reflected in a print that shows endangered animal species with extinct animals that have been blanked out.
All the profits from the sale of the Hussein Chalayan HOME tote bag will be donated to GoodPlanet (Yann Arthus-Bertrand's association working to protect the environment).
Starting from today, the Hussein Chalayan HOME tote bag will be a worldwide exclusive from www.thecorner.com, the online department store launched by YOOX Group dedicated to the new cutting edge collections by international designers.
* PPR Group has a majority stake in Puma Group, that has a majority stake in Hussein Chalayan company.
A limited edition t-shirt supporting charity exclusively available on thecorner.com
Neil Barrett, in collaboration with Oxfam International and Ucodep, has designed a limited edition t-shirt that will be available exclusively on www.thecorner.com supporting the two non-profit organizations for a common humanitarian goal.
The t-shirt is available in one size and in two versions, for him and her, portraying a graphic design that outlines the profile of a group of people who are pronouncing the slogan of Oxfam/Ucodep "We can change lives": together we can achieve more.
Oxfam International is one of the biggest non-governmental confederations made up of organizations which work with partners and allies in more than 100 countries to find lasting solutions to poverty and injustice.
Ucodep is an Italian non-governmental organization, who for more than 30 years, has worked with development projects and humanitarian companies in 20 countries south of the world, while also promoting fair trade in Italy.
In 2007, Oxfam International and Ucodep opened a campaign office together in Italy to inform civil society about the themes of global poverty and injustice.
Oxfam International and Ucodep have continually strived to inform governments of the needs of poorer countries and utilises celebrities and various creative minds to find new solutions to the problems they actively tackle.
"I always believed incorrectly, that I personally could do nothing... since listening to Colin Firth and his conviction in the belief that if we do not make an effort.. we are guilty of negligence, I realize that my previous belief was not true, and that it is essential for everyone of us to make an effort; "TOGETHER WE CAN CHANGE LIVES," Neil Barrett.
This initiative is a further demonstration that fashion can educate society about the poverty and injustice in the world.

Adam Kimmel creates a limited edition t-shirt exclusively for thecorner.com
For the first time ever, the New York based designer Adam Kimmel, in collaboration with contemporary artist Kon Trubkovich, creates a limited edition t-shirt exclusively for thecorner.com. Continually in search for conceptual thought and artistic expression, Kimmel chose Trubkovich, an emerging Russian artist based in New York to collaborate with him on this unique initiative. From May 2009, the limited edition tshirt will be sold exclusively on thecorner.com; the t-shirt has been created in three colours white, navy and black and features a print drawing of a vintage Californian number plate.
Kimmel stated that "My Spring/Summer Collection 2009 was inspired by the artists surrounding the Ferus Gallery in 1960's Los Angeles. Kon Trubkovich re-lives that spirit, which is why I collaborated with him on this T-shirt."
Adam Kimmel's wide-ranging quest for inspiration from the art world has embraced the style of many significant personalities and movements from which he takes inspiration. Kon Trubkovich was also photographed in one of Kimmel's latest lookbook.
Kon Trubkovich, the Russian born painter, sculptor, photographer and fashion designer explores themes of confinement, rebellion and autonomy in a self-referential parallel. Trubkovich is interested in the idea of achieving freedom within the restraints of incarceration, the desire to escape and the nature of that achieved freedom.
This artwork initiative represents a further step into the style of Adam Kimmel, whose collections are now available worldwide thanks to thecorner.com, the new virtual "department store" featuring the latest collections from cutting-edge international designers and a selection of hard to find Italian brands – many of them appearing online for the first time.
