November 2007 Chanel Vintage Sale

YOOX.COM CELEBRATES COCO WITH AN EXTRAORDINARY VINTAGE SALE ONLINE FOR THE HOLIDAYS

yoox.com takes a trip through time with Coco Chanel and her Maison, whose style remains as influential and cherished as ever. For months, the fashion experts at yoox.com have been selecting unforgettable pieces from around the world: from Paris to Milan to New York where Holly Brubach – the former Style Editor of the New York Times and celebrated author of fashion books – handed over various pieces from her private collection.

An extraordinary selection of precious items will be featured including hard-to-find signature styles and classic everyday treasures that make perfect gifts for those wanting something truly unique.

"Une femme est toujours trop habillée, jamais assez élégante." Coco Chanel's famous quote: "Women are always overdressed but never with enough elegance" that today has even more of a profound meaning. Almost a century ago, Gabrielle Chanel astonished the world changing women's fashion forever. She promised ladies a never-seen-before combination of elegance and comfort; the freedom of "moving ones arms and walking quickly."

Grandchildren of this innovation, women of the third millennium yearn for what was once considered the masculine uniform including tweeds that were sculpted perfectly to the body resulting in the ultimate feminine silhouette. After decades of success, the Chanel jacket lives on today adapting itself to contemporary styles looking as good with a pair of jeans as with a formal skirt.

Our virtual voyage departs from the ballroom at The Ritz, Paris, 1930s when Coco reflected, "to dress women in black and white for a ball - you can see only them." These are her colors, simple and elegant. Gabrielle changed how women dressed, "before me, nobody had enough courage to dress in black". She continued, "black is so strong, so noble that when people see you it remains forever in their memory."

Gabrielle's intuitions were genius: why would women need to change for each appointment throughout the day? Tea, cocktails and dinner. A dress with two pieces must allow one to leave in the morning and remain in perfect attire even for an elegant meal. In 1930 just as it is in 2007. Tweed jackets and suits provide an eternal luxury while jersey (another one of her hallmark fabrics) allows complete freedom.

From the 1930s, Coco designed jewelry to accessorize cloths. Pearls of every measure, faux diamonds and gold toned metals combined in stunning designs; her costume jewelry was the perfect accompaniment for her couture creations. Of the pearls, she commented: "I just simply won't start working without all my pearls."

Gabrielle Chanel's favorite flower, the camellia, inspired her very first jewelry pieces and remains to be the symbol of her brand and a reoccurring theme throughout her creations. For her there were hundreds of ways to wear her favorite flower.

To you Coco, Happy Holidays!

September 2007 yoox.com introduces the JEWELS GALLERY

A carefully curated selection of innovative and experimental jewels on www.yoox.com

yoox.com, the No.1 virtual boutique of multi-brand fashion & design in the world, presents a selection of innovative and original jewellery by 8 leading contemporary designers: Husam El Odeh, Tomolo Furusawa, Karen Walker, Delphine-Charlotte Parmentier, Ugo Cacciatori, Simone Vera Bath, Julie Sandlau, and I.O.D.
Fusing traditional techniques and styles with the contemporary the designers and their workshops have used a diverse assortment of materials such as silver, leather, and bronze, together with semi-precious stones like quartz, agate and citrine, to create unique, modern and innovative jewel collections.

HUSAM EL ODEH
28 year old German born Husam El Odeh studied fine art at the renowned Hochschule der Kuenste in Berlin and worked successfully as an artist in Berlin until he relocated to London in 1999.  There he exchanged the canvas for the body and started to make jewellery. The appeal of his original designs resides in finding a connection with the body, therefore making a visual statement that attracts our tactile senses. He uses hard metal, steel, gold, soft leather and pearls to show contrapositions, highly influenced by the Dada surrealistic approach to objects and the surrounding world. He has the unique capacity to play with Art by transforming beginning of 19th century dandy pieces into contemporary references such as street style, where even casts of teeth become glam and gold.

TOMOKO FURUSAWA
After studying Art History at university and working for several years as a chief buyer for fashion accessory boutiques in Tokyo, Tomoko Furusawa could resist her passion for jewellery design no more.
Tomoko Furusawa combines in her jewels the delicacy and aesthetics of traditional Japanese art and the influences of the Western world in which she lives. You may find in her unique pieces, the poetry of a Japanese stamp yet also the modern city lifestyle. Tomoko treats silver with a smooth mat finish, and the feather-like feel of her creations comes from the use of very feminine materials, such as pearls, semi-precious stones, ribbons and even wood. Hand-crafted pieces come to life and mix the smell of Japanese Gardens with the scent of a jet-set party overflowing with champagne bubbles.

KAREN WALKER
The multi-talented designer has not only created one of the most sought-after clothing labels in her native New Zealand, but puts her upbeat creativity to further use with her elegant and playful jewellery line. A true world traveler, her creations reflect her modern world-view, paired with an unmistakable pop twist. The essence of her work, however, never wanders too far from her roots: feminine in nature with a delicate touch--soft as an ocean breeze from the land of myths and magic that is New Zealand.

DELPHINE CHARLOTTE PARMENTIER
In 1991, after freelancing for leading fashion brands, Delphine-Charlotte Parmentier decided to start her own workshop. Her original jewel designs quickly attracted internationally renowned designers such as Christian Dior, Emmanuel Ungaro and Christian Lacroix. In 1997, Delphine-Charlotte opened her first boutique in the Marais, Paris and in 1999 she started a collaboration with Chanel. Her designs are futuristic and mix Swarovski crystals with pearls and stones such as agate, leather and even wool.

UGO CACCIATORI
Ugo Cacciatori has always nurtured a passion for materials and shapes. In 2001 he decided to fully dedicate himself to his passion for accessories, working with Marni, Valentino, Emmanuel Ungaro and other designers.  The young designer has conquered the hearts of celebrities, including Madonna and Nelly Furtado, with his baroque, sophisticated, and intellectual line. Exclusively for YOOX.COM, Ugo Cacciatori has designed a small-collection featuring three charms and two silver bracelets, using oxidized metals, semi-precious stones such as garnet and citrine, and craftmanship reminiscent of the past.

SIMONE VERA BATH
Simone Vera Bath was born in Berlin where she studied Art History and sculpture. In 1995, she began designing jewellery, launching her collections in Cap d'Antibes, London, Berlin and Rome. Her style and choice of materials are unique and unusual: fusing wood with gold, silver with bronze, resulting in pieces with contemporary appeal and archaic touches. Her jewels are one-of-a-kind, ready to wear sculptures of a rare beauty: imperfection, transformation and play are recurrent concepts.

JULIE SANDLAU
Danish designer Julie Sandlau gave up a modeling career in 2002 to pursue her true passion: designing jewellery. Her work has been a great success: her collections are now sold in the coolest stores worldwide and are worn by celebrities and stars, such as Reese Witherspoon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Keira Knightley, the super model Cindy Crawford and recently Beyoncé.
Inspired by cross-cultural trends, Julie Sandlau's jewels have two different souls: the minimal flare of contemporary Scandinavian design and the vintage appeal of "something you might have found in your grandmother's treasure box". The 2007 Autumn-Winter Collection available on YOOX.COM is inspired by the glamour of the '50s, with exotic additions: traditional oriental details and designs are softened with delicate pastel shades.

I.O.D
I.O.D is the acronym for Instruments Of Death and Items of Desire. Finding its source in Steven Trussell's imagination, the I.O.D jewels represent socio-political situations of our times and are messages to wear. His collections revolve around a specific theme, for example "Paris" or "Bonnie and Clyde". Founded in London I.O.D's originality has been a success worldwide.
