Florence and the Machine

November 2010

Florence Welch is the voice, heart and soul of Florence and the Machine. The fiery red-haired British singer is lauded for her musical talent as well as her flamboyant and very unique dress sense..

Florence and the Machine formed in 2007 in London. The band is the recording name of lead singer and songwriter Florence Welch and a collaboration of other artists who provide backing music for her, with Florence the only constant member. Her debut album Lungs, released in the summer of 2009, is an all-encompassing mix of harps, choirs, drums, string quartets and Gothic imagery. However, Florence says it’s usually simple. “Everything is about boys! The whole album is about love – and pain. People see my lyrics as crazy, but to me it’s an honest, heartfelt album. I didn’t set out to be wacky. I just want it to be emotive.” Amongst her most popular songs are her own creations, including “Kiss With A Fist”, “Dogs Days Are Over” and “Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)”, as well as covers such as Candi Staton’s “You’ve Got The Love”.
